Barcelona Day 3B – Old Town

What a busy day. We had an early start to see Montserrat, so we arrived back in Barcelona in time for lunch.  Luzzio is a restaurant next to our hotel with wood-fire grilled pizza that lured us right in.

We enjoyed our Gaudi walking tour so much that we booked a second walking tour focusing on the Old City from the same placa as before. We were guided through several narrow pedestrian streets.

Saw the Roman walls near the Barcelona Cathedral. (The ancient walls are to the right)

Close up of the ancient Roman Wall.

And found the marker for the highest elevation in Barcelona. (16.9m is not very high, by the way.)

Many of the ancient Roman walls and columns had been contained within other buildings and only rediscovered in the late 1900’s.

These Roman temple columns are embedded into some apartments.

We learned of the 13-year-old Christian martyr, Eulalia, who lived during the time of Christian persecution by the Roman Emperor, Diocletian. She was enclosed in a barrel embedded with knives and rolled down a hill.  Finally, she was decapitated.  Her remains are entombed in the church of Santa Maria del Mar. (St. Mary of the Sea), and she is the Patron Saint of Barcelona.

Our guide recommended Salamanca for dinner. We took the metro as far south as possible and started walking toward the  waterfront. Once again, we got turned around and walked what seemed like forever to find it. Ohhhh, so worth the walk!

The Olimpica platter contained prawns, shrimp, crab legs, rock fish, sole, hake, mussels, clams and potatoes.  The menu says it serves two, but we were stuffed to the gills or higher and had to leave some behind.

We walked down by the beach and sat on a bench to people-watch for a while. O.K. I blurred out a few people in the photo.  If you had seen the original, you would thank me!

We may have been stuffed, but there is always room for gelato. Tonight, Hubby had strawberry while I tried lemon – very tart!

Since we were walking along the waterfront, we didn’t find the restaurant’s front door until after we left.Next Post: The Market
