Cagliari, Sardinia, Italy

Sardinia is an island off the coast of mainland Italy.  We took a complimentary port shuttle to the port exit. There we found vendors selling tours.  The Little Train appealed to me.  It made a 40-minute circuit and slowed for pictures.  Photos were not easily made from the train, but it did help us to get our bearings, and it provided a quick overview of the city.  The cost was 9 Euro per person. There were other options, too.  One was a mini-van for 8-10 passengers at the same cost following the same route, but it offered an option for drop off at the castle and re-boarding every half hour to finish the route.  I did not price them, but there was also a city double-decker bus doing a tour, a horse-drawn tour wagon, and a motor coach offering shuttle service to the beach.  Carnival offered a beach shuttle for $20 per person directly off the ship, but the shuttle from town was less expensive.  I heard a girl tell her parents that she found out their family could all ride the shuttle round trip for 30 Euro. There were at least four in their family.

The train brought us back to the same drop-off point at the cruise port. An info kiosk was nearby – easily identified by a large “i.” We received a map and found out that wifi was free in the port area.  This is also where the family of four got their beach shuttle info.

As we left the shuttle drop-off area and crossed the street, there were some vendors offering private tours, too.  We declined the offers and used the map to explore on our own.  We wandered uphill looking at shops until we reached a plaza with several cafes and found a shady bench.

Surprisingly enough, the port wifi reached even there. We were able to check emails and Facebook but the connection was too slow to access larger websites and do Google searches.

Wandering around gave us a chance to enjoy the architecture up close. There are amazing details on these old buildings.

Wandering really works up an appetite, and what better place to have an appetite than in Italy.

We found a cafe so I could get my first Italian cappuccino of the trip.

and then decided we would try their wood-fired pizza with prosciutto for 6.5 Euro.  It was pretty large – probably about 14 inches, but really thin which made it manageable and delicious for two people to eat.

This restaurant offered free wifi but the connection was slow at our outdoor table. We used the restroom inside and found that the signal was strong inside, so I was able to download some new books.  Whew! I was down to my last book that I downloaded pre-cruise.  Isn’t technology wonderful?  I used to pack a bunch of books for a long trip.  Now I save a lot of weight in my suitcase.

We did some more wandering and found a gelato shop.

How about some peach and raspberry?

I was pretty full from the pizza, but gelato can’t take up much room can it?

I really enjoyed our day of wandering and discovering.  Sometimes this is the best kind of excursion.

Next stop: Back to Barcelona where the cruise began. Only, we are not going home!  We will board a second cruise ship, the Royal Caribbean Brilliance of the Seas for our back-to-back journey.
