Cozumel, Mexico

Cozumel is an island off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. With the recent scares and warnings about traveling to Mexico, I’ve had folks ask me about the safety of coming here. As of the date of this posting, there are no warnings from the US Dept. of State regarding Cozumel or the Yucatan peninsula.  We have always felt safe here, but as always, no matter where you are, be aware of your surroundings. Stay in the common areas. Travel in pairs at the least and better yet, groups.

We have been to Cozumel several times.  It is a great place just to get off the cruise ship and walk around the city.  There are several areas to pose for pictures.

The first time we went to Cozumel, we found a small boat to take us snorkeling. I was amazed at the clear water, the fish, and coral.  Hubby discovered that he really LOVED snorkeling, and we have gone several times since.

One of my favorite ship’s excursions was a trip by jet boat to Passion Island. The captain of the jet boat floored the engine and made 360 degree turns.  We got so wet. Hint: The front passengers were a little drier than the rear ones.

On the island there were plenty of complimentary beach chairs and palapas. Our excursion also included an all-you-can-eat Bar-b-cue lunch.

A giant water trampoline beckoned jumpers and there were floats for rent.

On a different visit, we chose to take a taxi to Chankanaab Park.

This is another great place for a beach break.  We saved a little on the entrance cost by downloading an online coupon before going. Complimentary lounge chairs are available.  There is a pool and a shallow area of water great for small children swimming. There is access to deeper water for snorkeling.

Snorkel gear and floats were available to rent for people who did not bring their own.  For an extra cost and tip, there are beach waiters who will bring food and beverages to you.  We walked around and saw the ruin replicas.  I heard people rave about the dolphin encounter, but we didn’t try it, and we never saw anyone trying their zip lines.

Cozumel decorates for Christmas, which makes this a fun holiday port visit as well.
