Grand Turk is a small port which accommodates two ships docked at the pier.
When you debark, you walk through a terminal full of shops. Whether you veer to your left or right, you can access the beach immediately.
If you enjoy playing in the water, veer left. It is more crowded for a reason. The sand is nice and there are chairs, clamshells, umbrellas and floats for rent. If you want a clamshell, plan to debark soon after arrival before they sell out. The beach to the right is quite rocky. Make sure you have water shoes if you play in the water on the right side of the terminal. The right side is great for soaking up the sun while watching the water in peace. If you prefer a pool, there is a nice one for cruise visitors just beyond the terminal.
What to See….
John Glenn, the first American to orbit the earth, splashed down near Grand Turk. There are monuments and placards of interest within an easy walk of the beach. (Notice the beach chairs in the background of this photo.)
The Turks & Caicos National Museum is a small museum. A few minutes inside will familiarize you with the history of the area.
Next Time….
I heard lots of good reviews of sailing, snorkeling, scuba and snuba. Grand Turk maintains a slow pace. I might choose snorkeling, but I will probably just enjoy a lazy day on the beach or by the pool again.
