Key West – Feb. 2020

There are several things to see and do in Key West during a day in port.

The shuttles offered to drop folks off at the entrance to the state park just outside the Naval Station.  To be honest, I never knew there was a state park in Key West, so next time I plan to put that on my list to see. Today, I have a different mission.

If you choose to visit Hemingway’s house, be ready to see lots of cats – maybe even the unique six-toed cats. I never got close enough to count their toes.

The Little White House is definitely worth a visit.  President Truman spent a good deal of time here during his presidency.

We ventured around the corner for a block to get a couple of better pictures of the exterior.

This one was taken through the slats of the fence:

We passed an entrance to the Naval Air station from Whitehead St.

People line up to have their picture made in front of the marker for the Southernmost point.  I had to wait several minutes to capture a shot with no one in the picture.  Fortunately for me, the waves were crashing, so there weren’t as many people anxious to get drenched in a photo. It didn’t take quite as long as I expected to get the shot I wanted.

The Coast Guard ship was visible from our deck.  A little distance outside the exit from the naval base is the state park on the right that I mentioned at the beginning of this post.  And a little past that on the right is the entrance to see the coast guard ship which is now a museum.

On a previous visit we found a restaurant for conch fritters and key lime pie.  Those two items are definitely “must-tries” while in Key West.

This review only covered the things you could see, and the options for sites to visit, along Whitehead street.  It was great for us since we just wanted a low-key day.  I do recommend starting your trek early in the day as it definitely gets a good bit warmer as the day progresses. Then, spend whatever time you want for shopping and looking around Mallory Square for the last thing before getting back onboard.

P.S. We also found a CVS on Front Street so we could pick up a few things to take back to the ship. Surprisingly, the prices did not seem inflated to me even though it is in a tourist area.

If you get a chance for a port day in Key West, it will definitely be worth your time to spend some time there.
