Riding the Rails in Alaska


The train ride from Denali to Talkeetna takes approximately 4 1/2 hours. Several cruise lines have dedicated rail cars for their passengers. On our journey was Princess and Holland America in addition to Alaska Railway’s own rail cars.  Each of our rail cars has a domed viewing area with tables for four and bar service.

If traveling during mealtime, descend the narrow stairs to the dining cars directly below. That is also where the restrooms are located.  Actually, there are two sets of stairs – one designated for ascending and one for descending – to alleviate people “traffic” jams.

It is nice to watch the unobstructed view and marvel at the vast beauty of Alaska.  The only downside is climate control.  If the sun is coming directly through the window it can get hot.  Just walk among train cars and take photos from other locations rather than the window seat to get a change of venue.  I have over one hundred photos of the scenery during this trip.  I’ve narrowed it down to just a few here:
