Riga, Latvia

Oceania provided a complimentary shuttle from the cruise ship to the city center.  It dropped us near Riga Castle.

Our Lady of Sorrows Church

Three Brothers is a group of three buildings that were built in very different times with different architectural styles. One was built in the 15th century and the other two in the 17th and 18th centuries respectively.  As we stopped to view the buildings, musicians hoping for tips were playing a tuba and French horn outside.

Beautiful cobblestone streets through the city

We did not ride this tourist sightseeing train.  It looked VERY bumpy and uncomfortable riding on those cobblestones.

Parliament

Powder Tower

Cat House

St. Peter’s Church

St John’s Church-  We happened upon a Soprano singing.  There was a poster on the door advertising a concert one evening.  I do not know if she was rehearsing or if she was offering a free noon concert, but either way, we enjoyed her singing accompanied by the organ.

House of the Blackheads was as built in the 1300’s as a craftsmen and merchant’s guild;  destroyed in WWII; and rebuilt in 1999.  The upper rooms are used for banquets and entertaining and the cellar houses displays of life during original times.

I always enjoy clever restroom signs like these at the House of the Blackheads.

Riga’s Monument to the Christmas tree

Rockabilly Restaurant – a great place for a soft drink and free Wifi

St. Mary’s Dome CathedralAnd a few other buildings I just liked

Riga’s old town is delightful.  Hubby researched it ahead of time, studied Google maps,  and went prepared with a list of the sites he wanted to see.  We covered most everything that the ship tours offered for a higher price but our cost included only a couple of small entrance fees.  Since the cruise ship offered a complimentary shuttle into town, this was an economical way to see the town.  Latvia’s currency is the Euro. Since several stops use on this itinerary use the Euro, we ordered some from our bank ahead of time rather than depending on finding an ATM or exchange building.

The next stop is Klaipeda, Lituania.
