Tel Dan and Tabgha

Tel Dan is a nature reserve in northern Galilee in Israel. The Dan Spring flows for a few miles before joining the Banias Spring. They combine to flow into the Jordan River.

Families come to the Tel Dan nature preserve to enjoy nature. Our guide said his son loves to come here and play in the water.

The ancient city walls stood guard against the enemies of the Israelite tribe of Dan who settled here

The location of the entrance to Dan and the city gates:

The ruler would have sat in a place of prominence at the city gate to pronounce judgments.

There is a plaque explaining the biblical story of Boaz here at the entrance to the city. Boaz would have sat in the city gates like these with the elders, but not in THESE city gates because Boaz was from Bethlehem, not Dan.

During the time of the kings, Jereboam built high places in the city of Dan and erected a golden calf for worship-(not to be confused with the golden calf Aaron made during the time of Moses.)

In Dan, some  mud-brick entrances were found that date back to the 1800’s BC. These are called the Canaanite Gates, the Three Gates, or Abraham’s gates.

After leaving Dan, we stopped at Tanureen for St. Peter’s Fish lunch, We also had the option of a fish filet or chicken, too.  I prefer a filet rather than having my food looking at me.

After lunch, we were off to the city of Tabgha  to see the church of the Multiplication  commemorating the time Jesus fed the 5000 with 5 loaves and 2 fishes. a mosaic on the floor shows a basket of loaves and two fish. Interestingly, the mural only has four loaves – representing that Jesus, the Bread of Life, is the 5th loaf.

Then on to the Church of Peter’s Primacy. This church is built near the Galilean seashore.

It commemorates the time after the resurrection when Jesus asked Peter three times: “Do you love me?”

We left the city of Tabgha and stopped at the Church of the Beatitudes.  A well-landscaped gardens and walkway lead to the church.Along the path are stone markers listing each beatitude. There are other sculptures and scriptures as well.

This church is built on the hillside and is the traditional site for the Sermon on the Mount. The following photos are taken from the inside of the church building. We were given a few minutes to enjoy strolling the grounds and to imagine people along a hillside (either this one or a similar one nearby) listening to Jesus teach.

Our next stop will be Capernaum.
